Classic Hairstyles for Men: The Side Part

The side part hairstyle has been around for ages, and its timeless popularity is as strong as ever. Famous men from John Wayne and JFK to David Beckham and Justin Timberlake have all, at some point or another, chose to rock the side part. It’s easy to see why so many men prefer it—it simply looks so damn good on almost any kind of hair! Want to get the look? I’ve laid out some tips for you so you can achieve the perfect side part.

Haircut: First things first. To get the best side part, you need to build the right infrastructure. In this case, I’m talking about your hair. To achieve the best visuals, you should keep the sides and back of your hair shorter than the top. I prefer to keep everything classic with a scissor cut, making sure everything is blended properly. I prefer the sides and back at 1 inch and top at 3 1/2 – 4 inches.

Products: I’m personally a fan of pomades, and recently I’ve been loving the Spiffy Pomade by Old Spice. It’s a great, water-based pomade that leaves you with a nice and clean matte finish. It works with any type of hair and smells better than any product I’ve ever used! It’s a superb product if you’re going for the clean-cut side part.

Technique: You must have damp hair, so it properly absorbs the pomade. Of course, the best time to do this would be after a shower. What is proper dampness, you ask? Basically, your hair should feel like it’s about 10-15 minutes away from being dry. Next, apply the product evenly throughout your hair. Remember to get the back of your head too because even though you don’t see it, everyone else does. Then, find your natural part. This can easily be achieved by brushing your hair forward and lightly shaking your head. You’ll notice that your hair will start to separate. This is your hair’s natural hair part. Finally, all you have to do is comb the sides down, push the front gently back and over to the side, and viola! You have yourself a stylish side part. For best results, let everything air dry and set. Once dry, I like to lock the look in with a gentle dash of hairspray.
